Once in a blue moon, an album comes along that shakes up the very foundation of modern music. Fiona Apple's second masterpiece, "When the Pawn...", is not one of those albums. But it sure is a bloody good time. From the moment Apple's haunting vocals kick in on the opening track, "On the Bound", you know you're in for a wild ride. The production is slick, the lyrics are introspective, and the overall vibe is just so, well, Fiona Apple. But don't let that fool you into thinking this is just another run-of-the-mill singer-songwriter album. Oh no, there's a dark underbelly to these tracks that will leave you questioning your own existence. Whether she's crooning about heartbreak on "Love Ridden" or belting out anthems of empowerment on "Limp", Apple keeps you on your toes, never quite letting you settle into a comfortable groove. And let's not forget the album's title, a 90-word poem that puts even the most verbose indie band's song titles to shame. If that doesn't scream "I'm a badass", I don't know what does. So do yourself a favour and give "When the Pawn..." a spin. You won't regret it. Just make sure you have a therapist on speed dial for when Apple's existential musings send you spiralling into an existential crisis. Cheers!
