The Yayhoos' latest offering, "Fear Not The Obvious," is a rollercoaster of a ride through the backroads of Americana-laden rock. With a title like that, one might expect the band to deliver something unexpected and groundbreaking. Alas, what we get instead is a mishmash of clichés and tired tropes that ultimately fall flat. From the opening track, "Gotta Get Outta Here," it's clear that the Yayhoos are playing it safe, sticking to tried and tested formulas that have been done to death by countless other bands. The lyrics are generic, the melodies uninspired, and the production lacks any real sense of excitement or innovation. That's not to say that "Fear Not The Obvious" is a complete washout. There are moments, like on the track "Hell to Pay," where the band shows flashes of their potential, with catchy hooks and energetic performances. But these moments are few and far between, lost amidst a sea of mediocrity. Ultimately, the Yayhoos have played it safe with "Fear Not The Obvious," delivering an album that is, well, obvious. While there are glimpses of promise here and there, it's not enough to save this lacklustre effort from sinking into the sea of forgettable rock albums. Fear not the obvious? Perhaps the band should have taken their own advice and strayed off the beaten path.
