John Zorn and Jesse Harris team up for a night of love songs that are more likely to put you to sleep than get you in the mood. As if whispering sweet nothings to each other in a dark, dingy jazz club, the duo's rendition of classic love songs is about as thrilling as watching paint dry. From the hauntingly slow tempo to the lacklustre vocals, it's hard to imagine anyone actually getting excited about this album. Harris's gentle strumming on the guitar and Zorn's meandering saxophone solos don't do much to elevate these tired love songs from their slumber. Tracks like "My Funny Valentine" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" sound more like funeral dirges than declarations of love. Even the live audience seems to be politely clapping along out of sheer obligation rather than genuine enjoyment. While Zorn and Harris are undeniably talented musicians in their own right, their collaboration on Love Songs Live leaves much to be desired. Perhaps it's time for them to part ways and find more exciting musical partners who can bring some much-needed energy to their lacklustre performances. Overall, Love Songs Live is a snooze-fest of an album that is best enjoyed as background music for a romantic dinner that you want to end quickly.
