Sleater-Kinney's latest offering, "Path of Wellness," is a sonic journey that is as bumpy as it is beguiling. The trio's first album since the departure of drummer Janet Weiss sees Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker steering the ship with a renewed sense of purpose. Opener "Path of Wellness" kicks things off with a bang, the pounding drums and fuzzy guitars setting the tone for what's to come. Brownstein's signature wail cuts through the mix like a hot knife through butter, with Tucker's soulful harmonies adding depth and emotion to the mix. Tracks like "High in the Grass" and "Worry with You" showcase Sleater-Kinney's ability to craft catchy, anthemic tunes without sacrificing their punk ethos. The raw energy and passion that have defined the band's sound for over two decades are still very much present, but there's a newfound sense of maturity and self-awareness that elevates the music to new heights. While "Path of Wellness" may not reach the dizzying heights of some of Sleater-Kinney's earlier work, it's a solid addition to their discography that shows the band still has plenty of gas left in the tank. Fans of the band will not be disappointed, and newcomers may just find themselves falling in love with Sleater-Kinney's unique blend of punk rock and indie pop.
