Tommy Stinson's latest offering, "Cowboys in the Campfire," could easily be mistaken for a drunken singalong during a wild west saloon brawl. The former Replacements bassist has certainly traded in his punk roots for a more rustic, campfire vibe on this album. From the opening track "Whiskey and Cigarettes" to the closing ballad "Faded Love," Stinson's raspy vocals and twangy guitar riffs transport listeners to a smoky honky-tonk bar in the heart of Texas. However, the album is not without its missteps. The track "Saddle Up, Cowboy" feels more like a parody of country music than a serious effort, with its over-the-top lyrics and cheesy harmonica solos. That being said, there are definite highlights on the album. "Desert Rose" is a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases Stinson's songwriting skills, while "Gone With the Wind" is a foot-stomping, boot-scooting anthem that will have listeners reaching for their cowboy hats. Overall, "Cowboys in the Campfire" is a mixed bag of country-rock tunes that will appeal to fans of Stinson's solo work. While it may not be groundbreaking, it is certainly a fun and enjoyable listen for those looking for a taste of the wild west.
