Once in a blue moon, an album comes along that defies all expectations and challenges the very essence of what it means to be “progressive”. IMPROGRESSIVE's latest release, "Primoin", is not that album. From the moment the needle hits the groove, it's clear that IMPROGRESSIVE are content to stay firmly rooted in the past. The opening track, "Regressive Rhapsody", sets the tone with its plodding tempo and uninspired guitar solos. It's like they took everything that was innovative and cutting-edge about progressive rock and threw it out the window. Lyrically, the album is a masterclass in cliché. From tired tropes about lost love to cringeworthy attempts at political commentary, it's like the band raided a bargain bin of overused phrases and called it a day. Musically, things don't fare much better. The songs all blend together in a monotonous haze of uninspired chord progressions and lacklustre vocal performances. It's the kind of music you'd expect to hear in the background of a failing dentist's office. In the end, "Primoin" feels less like a bold step forward for progressive rock and more like a sad reminder of everything it once was. IMPROGRESSIVE may have missed the mark this time, but here's hoping they can find their way back to relevance on their next effort.
