Renee Zellweger's portrayal of Judy Garland in the biopic "Judy" had us all tapping our ruby slippers together in anticipation, but does her accompanying album live up to the hype? The short answer? No, darling. From the opening track, it's clear that Zellweger's vocal range is about as limited as Dorothy's options in Oz. Her rendition of iconic Garland classics like "Over the Rainbow" and "The Trolley Song" lack the depth and emotion that made the originals unforgettable. The production on the album leaves much to be desired as well, with cheesy backing tracks that sound like they were ripped straight from a low-budget karaoke machine. It's a shame, really, considering the rich history of Garland's music and the potential for a truly enchanting tribute album. But fear not, dear listeners, there are a few shining moments on "Judy" that almost make up for its shortcomings. Zellweger's take on "Get Happy" has a bouncy energy that is infectious, and her duet with Sam Smith on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is surprisingly touching. In the end, "Judy" is a mixed bag. Zellweger's love for Garland is evident, but unfortunately, her musical talents fall short of capturing the magic of the icon. Stick to the original recordings, and keep dreaming of rainbows over the rainbow.
