Once in a blue moon, an album comes along that truly transports you to another realm. MELODY GARDOT's The Absence is not one of those albums. Instead, it's a jumbled mess of disjointed sounds and half-hearted attempts at being jazzy. From the moment you hit play, you'll be greeted with a cacophony of musical mishaps. It's as if someone threw a bunch of random instruments into a blender and hit "puree." The end result is a sonic smoothie that leaves a bad taste in your ears. Gardot's vocals are not much better. Instead of charming with her sultry tones, she comes across as a poor man's Norah Jones. You'll find yourself cringing with every off-key note and missed opportunity to truly connect with the listener. The production is also lacking, with muddy mixes and lacklustre arrangements that do little to elevate the material. It's a shame, really, as there are moments on The Absence that hint at something greater. But those moments are few and far between, buried beneath a mountain of mediocrity. In the end, The Absence is an album best left forgotten. It's the musical equivalent of a soggy sandwich left out in the rain - unappetising and ultimately disappointing. Save your ears and give this one a miss.
